The Warsaw Ghetto Uprising of 1943
The young Jewish men became dangerous enough to disarm and kill German squads, take their guns and clothes and successfully terrorize the Germans. They became a menace. The Germans decided to destroy the ghetto with professional calm as the Jewish men and boys fought with anything they could, including Molotov cocktails, homemade explosives, any guns and weapons to defend the Ghetto.
Arthur showed the people that perished as a long, curving line coming from the upper to the lower of the painting, as well as a break of the color where part of the Torah scroll shows through. A little girl is painted in the lower right as a symbol that life will prevail.
